Nutrition Tips for the New Season ... A Measure of Success

March 24, 2009

Michele Benoit, Registered Nutritional Consulting Practitioner and Registered Orthomolecular Health Practitioner.

Spring has almost sprung!  And with the warmer weather just around the corner, so is the season for t-shiirts, shorts and ah yes, the ever-dreaded bathing suit!!!  As you gear up for some long-awaited outdoor fun, here are a few tips to help set you up for success in shedding a little of your winter insulation ...

THINK SMALL in tackling your goals for weight loss and getting fit, make lots of smaller choices instead of taking the 'Go big or Go home!' approach.  Choose to focus on everyday behaviours you can change without turning your life upside down all at once.  This will help you stick to your goals, see small but measurable changes and lend towards a lasting lifestyle change.

PLAN AHEAD  Definately not a new concept for most and very helpful in staying on track.  While most people rarely make great food choices when already hungry, pre-planning meals and snacks is one of the best strategies for making better choices, maintaining optimal energy and keeping your motor running as efficiently as possible!

KEEP IT SHORT  While long range goals are important, creating realistic and measurable short-term targets or check-points along the way will allow you to acknowledge and enjoy your successes as well as help to keep you focused on the finish line.  One achievable objective every month (like losing 1-2 pounds per week) is reasonable and will serve as a great motivator.

BUDDY-UP!!!  Support can come in many shapes, forms and sizes.  Enlist with friends, family members or organized groups who will help to create the environment you need for success and will give you the extra push in reaching your goals.  And remember, as much as it is important to be accountable, it is just as important to have a healthy support system.

LOOK AHEAD  Don't confuse a lapse with a failure.  Remember that each day, and every meal, is a new opportunity and one not-so-great day does not eliminate all of your successes to date.  It is important (and fun) to honour your good behaviour when you hit a target or have a week of smart choices.  Choose a reward that makes you feel good, albeit a non-edible one of course!!!

What is a Registered Orthomolecular Health Practitioner?

Registered Orthomolecular Health Practitioner, or ROHP, is the designation given by the International Organization of Nutritional Consultants (IONC) to a qualified healthcare professional that specializes in maintaining or restoring biochemistry and physiology in the body for optimal health and wellbeing.

Orthomolecular health practitioners assess the unique dietary and nutritional requirements of an individual and utilize a full spectrum of customized naturopathies including: diet and nutritional supplements, detoxification and drainage.

Only practitioners who meet IONC standards may refer to themselves as a Registered Orthomolecular Health Practitioner.
